Multifunction inkjet printers have grown in popularity over the last few years and this has lead to an improvement in the quality and functionality of the devices with manufacturers competing for custom. Epson’s most recent offering the Stylus SX115 is the latest in a long line of budget multifunction Epson printers with small price tags and big spec sheets. One thing budget multifunction printers from all manufacture lack is value for money printer ink cartridges. The Epson Stylus SX115 is different from it competitors as it uses four separate Epson ink cartridges and this means you can change each cartridge individually which is far more economical than printer which use a tri-colour cartridges. Epson SX115 ink cartridges still cost a lot more than most people would like, £30 for a set make it about average for running costs but there are compatibles available which cost half the price of the originals. The device itself is very compact and well put together which is a surprise for a budget printer, which usual have a distinct “cheap” feel to them. The SX115 has a wide range of features including printing, A4 scanning and copying as well as direct photo printing from a memory card sand digital cameras. All of these things it does to a good standard and some of them it does very well indeed. The strongest point of the SX115 is it print quality, especially printing photos which are equal to that produced by a printer costing twice as much. One thing the SX115 is lacking is speed, the print speed is quoted by Epson to be in the region of 34ppm but this is a ridiculous claim as it is only capable of 5ppm in a decent quality setting. Another weak point of the SX115 is it operating noise which is higher than average. Overall the Epson SX115 strengths like print quality, economical running costs and small price tag outweigh its weaknesses and make it a good multifunction printer.
